5NP FAQ

Also known as:

Wait… you want to stick what in my ears?!

First and Foremost

  • 5-Needle Protocol (5NP), sometimes called the NADA protocol or Acudetox, is a form of ear acupuncture that involves placing five thin, sterile, single-use needles in each ear.

The protocol uses five specific points: Sympathetic, Shen Men, Kidney, Liver, and Lung. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these points are associated with stress regulation, emotional processing, detoxification, and supporting the body’s natural balance.

5NP is widely used in community settings, including behavioral health and recovery programs, as a simple, accessible way to support the nervous system. It can help reduce anxiety, agitation, and cravings, while promoting a sense of grounding and stability.

It’s a quiet, non-verbal practice. There’s nothing you need to process or figure out in the moment. The acupuncture supports the nervous system and helps the body access its natural capacity for regulation and healing.

  • The needles used in 5NP are very thin, much thinner than what’s used for injections. Most people feel little to nothing when they are placed. Some notice a brief pinch or moment of sensitivity, especially at certain points, but it usually passes quickly. If anything feels uncomfortable, I can adjust or remove a needle while still maintaining the benefit of the treatment. You’re always in control of your experience. If you have a fear of needles or feel unsure about trying acupuncture, we can start with ear seeds instead. These are small, non-invasive points placed on the ear that offer a similar lighter form of support.

  • Each person’s experience with 5NP can be little different. During the session, some people feel deeply relaxed, while others notice a quieting of the mind or body. You might feel slightly sleepy, or simply notice a shift in pace. Some people don’t feel much at all at first, and that’s okay too. Afterward, people often report feeling calmer, less anxious or agitated, and more grounded. Some notice improved sleep that night or a general sense of ease. 5NP can also support reduced cravings related to alcohol, nicotine, or other substances, and may enhance your engagement with other forms of care or support you’re already receiving.

  • That's okay! You don’t need to believe in it for it to be worth trying.

5NP is often used in settings like hospitals and recovery programs because it’s simple, accessible, and doesn’t rely on talking or mindset.

You’re welcome to approach it with curiosity, skepticism, or no expectations at all.

A simple, non-verbal way to support your mind and body

Reduce anxiety, agitation, overwhelm and cravings.

Improve sleep, and support a more steady baseline.

Enhance engagement with other forms of care or support.

Move the needle on your calm.

  • You’ll get settled in a chair or reclined on bolsters, whichever feels most comfortable. If we’re at the studio, both options are available. If I’m coming to you, we’ll use whatever setup feels best in your space.

I’ll gently place five small needles in each ear. This usually takes just a few minutes.

From there, you’ll rest quietly for about 20–30 minutes. Most people close their eyes, but you’re free to rest however feels right for you.

Once the needles are in, you’ll stay relatively still so they can remain in place. If you need to end early for any reason, that’s always okay.

There’s nothing you need to do during this time. No talking, no processing. Just give yourself permission to rest.

  • It depends on what you’re looking for.

Some people receive 5NP regularly for ongoing support, especially when working with cravings or substance use, while others use it more occasionally during periods of stress, transition, or when things feel like a lot.

If you’re interested in more frequent sessions, discounted bundle options are available.

If you’re unsure, we can talk through what might make the most sense for you.

  • After your session, it can help to:

    • drink water
    • move a little more slowly if you can
    • give yourself a bit of space before jumping into something highly stimulating

There’s nothing you need to do beyond that. Just notice how you feel and go about the rest of your day.

Some people feel more relaxed, others feel a little tired, and some feel energized. All of that is normal.

Occasionally, people may notice mild soreness at the needle sites, lightheadedness, or emotional sensitivity as the body settles. These effects are typically brief.

If anything ever feels off or doesn’t settle, you’re always welcome to reach out.
